Description of Buffer Tanks

Buffer tanks store thermal energy as a volume of heated or cooled water, decoupling the operation of heat or cold generators from the actual building or process load. By holding a reserve of energy, a buffer tank reduces the frequency of burner or compressor cycling, lowers standby losses, and enables renewable and waste-heat sources to be integrated efficiently into the system.

Thanks to modern welding techniques (submerged arc system with camera technology), we manufacture buffer tanks up to a diameter of 3300 mm. Each tank is calculated and manufactured according to your specifications, operating conditions, and available space.

Typical applications include:

• Heating buffer tanks for boiler and heat pump systems

• Cooling buffer tanks for chiller and district cooling networks

• Solar thermal and biomass installations requiring thermal storage

Capacity Sizing and Design

Correctly sizing a buffer tank is essential for system balancing. The required storage capacity is determined from the generator output, the minimum running time of the heat or cold source, and the permissible temperature spread. An adequately sized buffer prevents short cycling, improves combustion efficiency, and maximizes the utilization of renewable energy.

Our buffer tanks are manufactured from high-quality carbon steel as standard, with a stainless steel solution available for applications requiring higher corrosion resistance or hygienic standards. To achieve optimum stratification and efficient energy use, the tanks are equipped with internal connections and diffusers matched to the hydraulic circuit.

For internal corrosion protection we offer, for example:

• Hard rubber lining for aggressive water chemistries

• Epoxy resin coating such as Sika Permacor 136TW (drinking water approval)

• Hot painting such as Sika HS or Epimid

• External coatings as primer or with topcoat in RAL color

Quality and Warranty

All internal coating systems are carried out by reliable specialized companies. References include TipTop Oberflächenschutz Elbe GmbH or InProCoat Südwestfalen GmbH. After submitting a water analysis, we provide you with a 5-year warranty on corrosion protection.

Our buffer tanks are calculated and manufactured according to your specifications and requirements. Optionally, we also offer you access ladders, railings, or connecting bridges.

Acceptance of our buffer tanks according to DGRL with Module G and CE marking is easily possible.
